“HOME-BREW” MAKERS FINED AT TAUMARUNUI
DOUBLE “KICK” SLY-GROG Special to THE SUN TAUMARUNUI, Thursday,, Charges of keeping liquor for sale within a proclaimed area, and of carrying on the business of a brewer without being the holder of a brewer's licence, were preferred, against George Edward Gardiner, billiard saloon proprietor, in the Taumarunui Magistrate's Court today, before Mr. R. M. Watson, S.M.
Evidence was given that when Gardiner's premises were raided by the police, 96S bottles of homebrewed beer were found, and 105 gallons were in the process of being made in vats. Sergeant Sivyer said samples of the beer had been analysed by the Government analyst, whose report showed that it was twice as strong as the average beer brewed in New Zealand, and stronger even than the most expensive beer imported from England. The magistrate fined accused £SO on the charge of keeping liquor for sale, and £25 on the charge of brewing without a licence. An order was made lor confiscation of the liquor.
