UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEM
CONFERENCE IN SOUTH Special to THE SUN CHRISTCHURCH, Today. The following: resolutions were carried unanimously at a conference of the representatives of public bodies and institutions convened by the Mayor of Christchurch, the Rev. J. K. Archer, to discuss means of dealing: with the unemployment problem: “That this conference, called in accordance with the suggestions made by the retiring Governor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson, to consider the subject of unemployment, resolves as follows: “That the problem should receive the immediate and continuous attention of tiie Government, local bodies and citizens generally. “That the Government be recommended to consider the advisability of initiating a great permanent roading scheme, to be financed by using the* proceeds of the petrol tax and other available funds for paying interest and sinking funds on the loans necessary for carrying out the scheme. “That this conference resolves itself into a committee to further the effort to find work and relieve distress.” The following recommendation was held over pending the publication of the report of the special committee set up by the Government to consider unemployment:—“That the - Government be advised to give effect to Sir Charles Fergusson’s suggestion and call a special national conference to consider the problem in its national aspects.”
