BYRD'S SUPPLY SHIP
ELEANOR BOLING RETURNS
EXTRA STORES WANTED From Our Own Correspondent DUNEDIN, Today. Having failed in her attempt to break through the pack ice to RearAdmiral Byrd’s base at Little America, the supply-ship Eleanor Boling arrived back, in Dunedin yesterday to load coal and stores for the other ship. City of New York, which was then still waiting for a chance to get through the ice. The vessel berthed yesterday afternoon at the Rattray Street Wharf, where she was welcomed by a large crowd. The Mayor of Dunedin, Mr. R. S. Black, welcomed Captain G. L. Brown and his crew. Immediately after clearing the heads on her voyage South the Eleanor Boling ran Into bad weather and being deeply-laden with coal anu stores, laboured badly. Eight days and 22 hours after leaving she reached the ice pack and joined the whaling vessels Kosmos, Southern Princess, C. A. Larsen, Sir James Clark Ross and N. T. Nilsen Alonso, which were waiting for the ice to open. She delivered store and mails to these ships, including 6001 b of fresh meat to the Kosmos. The vessel then cruised along the edge of the pack as far as Scott Island until February 1, when orders were received from Rear-Admiral Byrd to return to Dunedin for coal and stores for the City of New York and to return as quickly as possible. She left on the same day and will stay in Dunedin until Wednesday. This time it is expected that there will be no difficulty in getting through the ice.
