LABOUR’S PLEA
MACDONALD DEFENDS STATE POLICY BY-ELECTION MESSAGE LONDON, Monday. The Prime Minister, Mr. MacDonald, has forwarded a message to the electors in the Brightside division of Sheffield, the seat for which is vacant through the elevation of Lord Ponsonby to the peerage. In this Mr. MacDonald claims that his Government has successfully pursued a policy which commands general approval. It has, he says, upheld Britain’s legitimate interests, but has taken every step to improve relations and strengthen the foundations of assured and well-organised peace. At present the Government is participating in a vital conference, which seeks to limit and reduce naval armaments. In this great task it is essential that the Government shall have the backing of the British people. Finally the Prime Minister appeals to the electors of Brightside to encourage the Government with an unmistakable vote of confidence.
