CHURCH AND STATE
DELICATE SITUATION FOR HOME LEGISLATORS COMMISSION PROJECTED LONDON, Monday. The “Daily News” says the Church of England will face a momentous crisis at the Church Assembly on Wednesday. On that occasion, as the outcome of the rejection by the House of Commons of the revised Prayer Book, the Archbishop of York, Dr. William Temple, will propose the appointment of a. commission to inquire into the relations between the Church and the State, and to determine how far the principle of the inalienable right of the Church to formulate and express its faith in Christ can effectively be applied in the present circumstances. The Bishop of Durham, Dr. Herbert H. Henson, will support Dr. Temple. Evangelical churchmen intend to oppose the motion as they fear it would lead to the slippery slope of disestablishment. Dr. Henson, who is leading a. disestablishment campaign within the Church, admits that the motion will disclose such a conflict between the Church and the State as must compel a drastic alteration of their present relations. It may even require legal separation.
