ARAPUNI STOPPAGE

“POWER BOARD TAKES THE KICKS” P.W.D. STATEMENT "This is very interesting, but it does not help us much with our consumers,” remarked Mr. W. J. Holdsworth, chairman of the Auckland Electric-Power Board, when the board yesterday afternoon received a statement on the stoppage of Arapuni power on January 22. The statement of the causes and the steps taken to remedy the stoppage came from Mr. T. MacLennan, district electrical engineer at Hamilton to the Public Works Department. Mr. MacLennan said the interruption was due to a slip in the governor drive at Arapuni. As a result, the speed of the pendulum was low; the turbine gates opened and an excessive speed was produced. The machine was stopped and seemed almost normal when started again. The governing became erratic once more and the machines had to be made parallel to make one unit do the work. This took a good deal of time, but the station staff was not able to decide the duration of the stoppage. “I have told the engineer of the Public Works Department that the department does not come into contact with the consumers as we do,” continued the chairman. "We have to take the kicks.”,
