NZ TENNIS CONTINUES

TOURNAMENT NEARS END FAIR WEATHER TODAY Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. The tennis championship continued in warm, dull weather, with a slight northerly wind. Play commenced at 10.30 a.m. with a match abandoned last evening owing to failing light. Wilson and Mrs. Thomson had the easiest of victories from Orbell and Miss Wake, who were very troubled by the windy conditions, and made frequent errors. Wilson was very dangerous at the net, and his opponents seemed unable to keep the ball a wav from him. If. O. France did most of the work in the mixed doubles against Sturt, and Miss Lloyd, who did not combine very well. Like Miss Wake, Miss Lloyd found the gusty conditions a great handicap. Isabel Morrison's powerful game was too much for Mavis Howe, last year’s junior doubles champion. Miss Morrison maintained the pressure throughout, never abandoning her vigorous hitting even when it cost her numerous errors. Miss ITowe was careless and slow in covering the court, seeming to realise her opponent's superiority. Miss Morrison played particularly well against a freshening wind. In the boys’ singles semi-finals, M. Heenan bad W. G. Robertson a set down, 4 —5, and love 40, but missed that chance and never had another. Robertson, who has been playing poorly, came on to his game and rushed the net throughout the final set, in which Heenan was outclassed. R. R. Lees eased up in the middle of his match with W. T. Tender and dropped the second set, but in pace and placement was definitely Tender’s superior and took the decisive set by another burst of hitting. Results: COMBINED DOUBLES Second Round A. L. France and Miss Howe beat Johns and Miss Knight, 6—o, G—X 12 — 10.
