TAKAPUNA DESTRUCTOR
CR. GUINIVEN’S VIEWS The site upon which the destructor that serves the combined North Shore boroughs is erected, was again under discussion by the Takapuna Borough Council last evening. Cr. J. Guiniven “Suggested, in a letter, that the methods proposed for the minimisation of the smoke nuisance alleged to exist, were foredoomed to failure. These methods would prove abortive and highly costly. The trouble was more a matter of location than of design, the destructor being built in a depression with the smokestack very little higher than the surrounding residential property. Until the plant was dismantled and the present site abandoned, the existing noxious gas and smoke troubles would continue to exist. The Mayor: Can you suggest any suitable site for the re-erection of the plant? Mr. Williamson reminded members that Takapuna was merely the administering authority for the joint committee of control, upon which all three partner boroughs were represented. Takapuna itself had no power to alter or vary anything, but, as Mayor, he would welcome any practical suggestions that would help to allay any trouble with regard to incomplete combustion. Various otlTer speakers were of opinion that Cr. Guiniven should cease harassing the joint committee, of which he was at one time a member. The letter was eventually referred to that body for consideration at its next meeting.
