Smith to Attack Mile Record on Muriwai
NEXT WEDNESDAY ORETI APPEARANCE OFF Norman “Wizard” Smith has definitely announced that he will make an attempt to lower his own Australian and New Zealand onemile record time with his specially designed racing car “Anzac,” on Muriwai Beach next Wednesday. In setting a new time for the mile on the Ninety-mile Beach on January 11, when he attained a speed of 146.347 miles an hour. Smith w r as a little disappointed. He had aimed at a speed much above that aud was confident that had more favourable conditions prevailed he would have hit a speed nearer the 160 miles an hour mark. That he could at least better his time for the mile was proved when he cracked tjie ten miles world record at an average speed of 148.637 miles an hour. Last week Smith announced that he intended to take the “Anzac” to Oreti Beach, near Invercargill, which is considered to be a wonderful, natural speedway, possibly better than the Ninety-mile Beach. Owing to the delay in the attack on the world's ten miles record he was forced at the last minute to abandon the idea of going South. Before leaving for Rotorua yesterday Smith told a Sun representative that he had made all necessary arrangements for his appearance at Muriwai next Wednesday, when' he intended to make an attempt to better his time for the one mile. And he was confident of doing so by a good margin. The Auckland Automobile Association is interested in Wednesday’s venture and is in charge of the timekeeping.
