FIRE AT WHITE HOUSE
SECOND OUTBREAK IN FORTNIGHT TALK OF INCENDIARISM WASHINGTON, Saturday. Following closely upon the fire in White House on December 24, enormous crowds of excited people gathered there again today, when flames swept the supplementary document room under the dome of the main Capitol building. The fire presented a brilliant spectacle as flames and smoke poured through the roof and the fourth storey windows. The firemen had the outbreak under control in half an hour. At first it appeared that the historic structure was threatened with the worst fire since both wings were burnt down in 1812. Great damage was done, principally by water. The suggestion is made that the two fires in White House indicate the activities of an incendiary, but the rumour has not been substantiated. On Christmas Eve, December 24, tire destroyed the recently remodelled executive offices of the President, Mr. Hoover, in White House. Half an hour after the fire began dense clouds of smoke were still pouring from the structure. The entire building, including the President's office, was thoroughly soaked with streams of water poured on to the flames.
