FIRE DESTROYS SCHOOL
TITIRANGI BUILDING RAZED BUCKET BRIGADE’S EFFORTS Fire destroyed the Titirangi School and the schoolhouse, consisting of the main room and four other rooms, at 11.30 o’clock last night. occupants of the house portion, Miss V. Witten, aged 23, and Mr. R. Witten, aged 19, were aroused with difficulty by the neighbours, Mr. H. Jones and his family, who noticed the outbreak about 11 p.m. A bucket line was formed by residents of the locality but the wooden building burned quickly under a steady northerly wind. Even with a connected water supply, the efforts to save the building would have been difficult. . Nothing was saved from the building. The school was 70 years old, and it is stated that the insurance was recently cancelled. The schoolmistress was absent on vacation at the time of the fire. The fusing of an electric wire has been suggested as the cause of the fire. Windows of a house adjoining the school, owned by Dr. W. Pettit, were cracked by the intense heat.
