THE PRISON SYSTEM
Sir,— The descriptions in your paper, by former convicts, of the conditions in Mount Eden Prison simply serve to show the appalling ignorance of the public of the methods employed in New Zealand to punish offenders of the law. I consider that a country should show its degree of civilisation in its practices for the reformation of delinquents. The reformation of prisoners, as employed by the Government of New Zealand, seems, from the allegations of your correspondents, to be a travesty of the ordinary notion .of what the word signifies. It is a fact that the prison reforms which have taken place since the time New Zealand began to feel its feet as an individual country—not so very long ago, either—have passed mainly unnoticed by the community. If justice were really served an outline would be given in our schools of the methods used under our prison system for the re-moulding of character. And yet, are the degrading sanitary and the living conditions
alleged by the ex-convicts calculated to mould any character? The public should surely- know something more about this question. ATAFU.
