MOTORISTS’ GUIDE

Sir, — I have been astonished of late at the number of motorists and motorcyclists who are careless about their signalling. You and your readers will agree with me that it is extremely annoying tc see part or the whole of a hand projecting from the side of a car, with no more than a wrist and hand showing. Undoubtedly this is a sjgnal, but what does it mean? I am both a motorist and a cyclist, and I have studied this subject most carefully. I have made mental notes of the actions of all types of drivers and riders and have come to the conclusion that motorists are more careless than motor-cyclists, and that women dually ba^ 04 W ° rSe than “^-though

I am sure that there must be careful drivers, such I, who are puzzled by the mysterious signalling of their fellow motorists and who might profit by the notes I have made following my observations. I enclose a precis of my findings which will be embodied in treatise I intend, to write. First ascertain the sex of the driver. ~ In . case of a woman driver ti? Is ’k apparently but °ne signal used by her, namely, “Guess what I am going to do.” i

. N -B.—The easiest way to do this is ? y ■ * he - niethod of elimination, the train of reasoning being as follows(a) is she waving to a friend? passenger ?° imine ° Ut (c) Is she feeling - for rain? If none of these applies, then there remains to be determined:(a.) Is she turning? (b) Is she slowing down? (cj Is she stopping? -.ln the case of the male, the meanln¥ of ® signal may often be determined by the character of the sur-

roundings, the method being as follows : (a) Look for a building decorated with a lion rampant, or bearing an advertisement for spirituous liquors. It such a building is on the right, it may be taken for granted that the motorist is turning to the right. If on t.ie other hand, it is on the left, he is quite likely stopping. QUERULOUS.
