SHIELD CRICKET

Sir,— In the first flush of their victory over Otago, Auckland cricketers appear to forget that to a very large extent th#y owe their success to their English coach. Looking back over Auckland’s record during the past few seasons, and remembering the big part played by Bowley in the provincial victories, the thought arises that it would probably be better for all concerned if professional coaches were not played in Plunket Shield matches. It would seem that at present these matches do not indicate the real strength of a province, but the financial ability to secure the best men available. After all, it is not the actual score that a coach knocks up in these big matches, or the wickets that he takes, that count. What really matters is the performance of the men who are receiving the coaching. SQUARE LEG.
