DEEPENING HARBOUR CHANNEL
CONTRACTORS GIVEN RELIEF WHANGAREI, Thursday. The Whapgarei Harbour Board held a special meeting today to discuss the question of releasing the contractors, Mounce and Son, from their contract for deepening the Kioreroa channel. The contractors explained that their plant was not heavy enough to remove the sand-stone bar below Kioreroa and their financial position would not allow them to purchase heavier machinery. They asked that they be released from their contract. The engineer said the contractors had met with ill-fortune, and it would be impossible for them to complete their contract. If they completed the contract the board would have to pay £1,776, and with £997 charged against the job for suction dredging The board was not likely to lose if the contract was abandoned. It was decided to release the contractors from their contract.
