RECORD OUTPUT

GLEN AIFTON COLLIERY MINES CLOSE FOR HOLIDAYS From Our Own Correspondent HUNTLY, Friday. Glen Afton Collieries closed down today for the year and all Waikato coal mines will be idle till January 6. In an interview today, Mr. P. Hunter, mine manager at Glen Afton. said they had had a most successful year. Mr. Hunter gave the following table showing the volume of business transacted by the company during the last four years:—l926, 145,464 tons; 1927, 176,254 tons; 1928, 167.633 tons; 1929, 170,000 tons.

These huge tonnages place Glen Afton in tho lead for the greatest output of North Island coal mines, and second in New Zealand only to the Westport Coal Company. Further developments, with consequent increase in output, are planned for next year. Additional railway sidings have been put in, and a complete new coal screening plant will be completed by May of next year. To expedite the work of excavating tracks for increased siding room, a steam navvy has been at work for some considerable time, and thousands of tons of earth have been removed.

The tree planting areas of the company are now in excellent order and the growth of the pine species is most apparent. It will ensure a plentiful supply of mining props in the near future, an invaluable asset to any coal mine.
