“NO UNFAIRNESS”
SYDNEY’S PROTEST ABOUT VISITING SWIMMERS. ITINERARY PREARRANGED Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Today. In reference to the Sydney cable, the secretary of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association denies that any unfairness has been shown to Ryan and Griffiths. Their itinerary was arranged before the arrival of the swimmers in New Zealand, and was arranged on the assumption that they were fit. Griffiths proved to be so, but Ryan was off colour, a fact that could not be foreseen in New Zealand. The tour was started in Auckland, not because the New Zealand Association was anxious that Ryan should meet Bridson at the start of the tour, but because climatic considerations made it essential that the start should be made in the warmer waters of the North
The Auckland Centre arranged the quarter-mile on the first night and a furlong race on the second. The furlong was changed to the half-mile at Ryan’s own request.
