Death from Heart Failure At: an inquest this morning at Napier on {Sarah Jane Alderman, u widow, who died after having her teeth extracted under an anaesthetic at tlio Napier Hospital, a verdict was returned that she died of heart failure duo to shook from the operation, combined with tlio effects of pyorrhoea. # * * Charged with Incendiarism In the Palmerston North Police Court; today Henry Bell, aged 64. a cook at present unemployed, was charged with wilfully setting tiro to a building in Ruatine Street last evening. Ho was remanded till this afternoon. A constable going homo noticed the tire and warned the occupants, and arrested accused. —P.A. Intoxicated Motorist William Whalley was fined £lO and his licence was cancelled for 12 months for being intoxicated in charge of a motor-car at Ashburton. Defendant, thinking he was at the crossing, ran into the railway yard, damaging his car against a stationary rako of trucks. —P.A. * # * Scow Excelsior Damaged The scow Excelsior, owned by Grp-* tain T. P. Somerville, which was damaged through bumping on the beach at New Brighton, near Miranda, was towed back to port by the Auckland. Launch and Towboat Company’s tug Kumea, arriving here at five o’clock this morning. It was not necessary for her cargo of sand to be discharged, and she is now having her damaged planks repaired by Shipbuilders, Limited, of Freeman’s Bay. Intoxication Charge Charged with being found intoxicated in a motor-car in Hobson Street yesterday, Herbert Kane was remanded at tlio Police Court this morning until tom orrow.
Kane, who was arrested by Constable Greig, was bailed yesterday in one surety of £SO and two eecli of £25. Mr. Snedden appeared for accused and asked for a remand until tomorrow, explaining that an important witness was not available this morning. Suppression of the name was refused.
Fight at Races Pleading guilty to fighting at the Takapuna racecourse. F. Busch, was fined £ 1 at the Police Court this morning. Associated with him in the charge was H. Gillespie, who did not appear, as his summons had not been served.
Bascli said that ho had been given provocation. “Beer was the provocation I think,” said Sub-Inspector McCarthy. “They were having a stand-up fight in front of everybody.”
Illegal Raffle An unauthorised raffle by which it was hoped to obtain funds in aid of a club resulted in the appearance in the Wellington Police Court today of Frank Chapman, representative of the Marunui Surf and Life Saving Club, who pleaded guilty. A fine of £5 was imposed. The chief detective remarked that illegal lotteries were fairly prevalent, but it. was not an easy lhatter to get at those* responsible. Chapman was a member of the executive the club and elected, to be charged when the pc lice paid a visit to the clubhouse.
Woman Still Missing No trace has yet been found of Mrs. Chambers, who has been missing from her lodgings at 163 Great North Road, New Lynn, for five days. Mrs. Chambers went out for a walk on Sunday. She had been at her lodgings for about a month prior to her disappearance, and all her belongings are still at the house. She has two relatives, Mr. John Ward, farmer, of Colville, who is a nephew', and a cousin, Mr. Scott Ward, farmer, of Coromandel.
