FINED FOR ASSAULT
ANGRY SEPTUAGENARIAN HITS OUT Two blows landed on the nose of a Rugby Union employee at Eden Park last September resulted in William Shaw, aged 68, being ordered to pay £2 costs at the Police Court this morning for assaulting Michael Lenihan. “He went too far and lost his temper,” commented Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., “but I won’t fine him.” Shaw, who was represented by Mr. Dickson, pleaded not guilty. Two Eden Park officials, one of them being Lenihan, said Shaw had been standing on a stone wall at the back of the park. Thinking he was coining in without paying his shilling, Lenihan had gone over and remonstrated with him. Defendant had then struck out at him once or twice, hitting the ofiicial on the nose. Shaw’s explanation was that he was on his own property, which adjoined the Park. The football crowds stood on his stone fence and broke it down. When the game was over they swarmed through his garden, doing a great deal of damage. He had been standing on his own side of the wall when Lenihan had leaned over and pushed him.
The magistrate ordered the imposition of costs only, remarking that defendant had to pay a solicitor and £2 witnesses’ expenses.
