CHRISTMAS PICTURES

CINEMAS TO OPEN Numerous applications for the screening of motion picture programmes on Christmas Day were approved by the City Council last evening. The theatres may open from 7pm Programmes must first be submitted to the Town Clerk, Mr. J. S. Brigham, for approval. Objection to the opening of the theatres was made by Cr. A. J. Entrican, who moved that the applications be declined. Cr. G. Brownlee seconded. “I do not see why picture houses should be allowed to make money while other business premises are forced to close,” said Cr. Entrican. The amendment was defeated.
