BUCHANAN AWARDS

PRESENTED AT ONEHUNGA SCHOOL YOUNG CITIZENSHIP That education does not mean the mere acquisition of knowledge, is fully realised by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Buchanan, of Quadrant Road, Onehunga, who have invested a capital sum in perpetuity with the Public Trustee for the reward of Onehunga school boys and girls showing the greatest capacity for citizenship.. The interest accruing from the fund thus invested is annually divided between the most approved boy and girl attending the Onehunga and Te Papapa public schools and amounts to the value of about £ 6 to each. The terms, of the trust stipulate that the prizes are to be awarded to the boy and girl who, during the year, have displayed the greatest capacity for overcoming the obstacles of life, and whose school work, apart from its quality, had shown determination of character, integrity and capacity for leadership. This afternoon, at the breaking-up function of the Onehunga School, Lela Men dry and Fred Ashton were acclaimed the 1929 winners, and each was presented with a cheque by Mr. and Mrs. Buchanan. Ten prizes given by the directors of the Auckland Savings Bank for an essay on “Thrift” were presented by the Mayor, Mr. E. Morton, to Eugenie Breeze, Desmond Leahy, James Wilkins, Nola Tribble, Phyllis Langton, C. Claydon, Iris Keen, Arthur Sames, Victor Adams and Edna Garner. Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P., presented the Standard VI. certificates, remarking that of a class of 73 pupils there had been no failures and each of the recipients was entitled to two years’ free tuition at a secondary school. The chairman of the school committee, Mr. W. H. Hayward, present'd good attendance certificates to 150 scholars. During the afternoon the children gave pleasing displays of folk dancing, drill, and several musical items, including carol singing. The ceremony concluded with the entertainment of the visitors by the headmaster, Mr. A. E.
