JURY-TRIAL ABOLITION

TASMANIAN LEGISLATORS PASS BILL TWO JUDGES INSTEAD Reed. 9 a.m. HOBART, Sunday. The Tasmanian Legislative Council has passed a Bill to abolish trial by jury in criminal cases. Two Judges are provided for instead, and a Criminal Court of Appeal will be created. Trial by jury has long been regarded as unsatisfactory. Acquittals in some instances have been so flagrant that the authorities have been discouraged, and say there is little use in tracking down offenders.
