HUSBANDS POISONED
FOUR HUNGARIAN WOMEN SENTENCED UNWANTED BABIES KILLED Reed. 9.5 a.in. BUDAPEST, Sun. At the husband-poisoning trial, Juliana Lipka was sentenced to death, and three other women were sentenced to life imprisonment, detectection of the murders was long postponed, because the local coroner was related to the midwife Olah, and returned verdicts of death from natural causes. Olah and another midwife began supplying poison to kill unwanted babies, and went on to supply larger doses for adults. The defence demanded an inquiry into the difficulties of earning even a most meagre livelihood in an overcrowded district of small holdings, surrounded by vast and poorly cultivated estates. Hopeless poverty was responsible for the menfolk’s only recreation being heavy drinking.
