WASTE OF TIME
OVERSEAS SHIPS AT N.Z. PORTS SHIPPING FIRMS’ ATTITUDE Efforts by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce to speed up loading and ■ discharging of overseas shipping, to reduce the time spent in New Zealand waters, have not received very encouraging support. The Dairy Produce Board, whose i support was sought when making new freightage contracts, advised the council yesterday that it recognised the delay, but pointed out that the difficulty iu the way of minimising the time spent by ships in New Zealand was that the shipping companies and the shippers, except for the dairy and meat boards, were free agents. The shipping companies were entirely separate bodies in handling inward and outward cargo. , The board certainly had dairy produce to ship at each port, but these could be reduced so that ships need not call at more than three ports. The shipping companies, however, took up the attitude that they must treat their trade as a whole, and there was no such thing as pooling, otherwise a great deal of time could be saved.
