OTAHUHU BOROUGH COUNCIL
When a request from the Industrial Union of Workers was received at last' evening’s meeting of the Otahuliu Borough Council for a donation to their picnic fund, the Mayor said that no donations had been made in the past. It was the usual custom to donate a sum to the employees' pichic. It was decided to adhere to the previous custom. The Tamaki Progressive League wrote drawing the council’s attention to the vandalism prevalent in the borough, and asked that the council take steps to abate it. The league also complained of the dangerous condition of the entrance to Cameron Street and Thomas Street. The letter was referred to the Works Committee. The Auckland Electric-Power Board advised that the extra lights applied for by the council would be ready in a few days. The board expressed regret that it could not arrange for three lights on the Great South Road. The traffic inspector reported that for the quarter ending November 30, heavy traffic fees amounting to £519 16s 7d had been collected. A proposal by Mr. Grey that the traffic inspector be instructed to confine his prosecutions to breaches within the borough was defeated. A deputation representing the Otahuhu Returned Soldiers’ Social Club waited on the council and asked it to sponsor a subscription list, in aid of the Roll of Honour Fund. It was decided to accede to the deputation’s request. In view of the financial stringency of the borough, the recommendation of the Finance Committee that not more than £3O be spent on material for all works until March 31 was adopted. The clerk reported that the general account was in debit £6,033 9s lid.
