HARBOUR BORINGS

GOOD RESULTS REPORTED ROUTE TO NORTHCOTE POINT “The chairman of the committee permitted representatives of the association to witness the boring operations on the suggested sites. Five bores were put down on the line of the Shoal Bay route but these were not very satisfactory from a bridgebuilding point of view, one failing to reach a solid base at a depth of 115 ft below the mud,” said Mr. R. H. Greville at a general meeting of the Auckland Harbour Bridge Association held last evening. Work was now under way on the route from Fanshawe Street toward St. Mary’s Bay to Northcote. Two bores had been put down with most satisfactory results. Everything looked very good so far as the tests had progressed and they should be completed before Christmas. If such satisfactory were met with on the the line between Northcote Point and the western mole, it would appear to be altogether unnecessary and a waste of money to put bores down on the line between Sentinel Road and Birkenhead Point. The majority of the evidence favoured going round St. Mary’s Bay to Fanshawe Street and the commission was concentrating the bulk of borings on this site. The cost of the bridge could be accurately estimated when the borings demonstrated the country on which it would be necessary to build.
