SLY-GROG AT ARAPUNI
MOTHER AND SON FINED LIQUOR SOLD TO POLICE Special to THE SUN PUTARURU, Thursday. Following the raid by the police on premises at Arapuni last week, Mrs. Elizabeth Gibbs and her son John Gibbs appealed in the Magistrate’s Court today on two charges of selling liquor without being holders of a licence. Mr. J. R. Lockhead, for defendants, pleaded guilty. Evidence was given by the police that several complaints had recently been received on account of men at Arapuni being able to get unlimited supplies of liquor, and disturbances had resulted. Sales of liquor at Gibbs's house had taken place on two occasions to a plain clothes policeman, and following tin's a raid took place on Friday, December 6, when 18 bottles of ale were found in the house and 88 bottles of ale in a motor-car shed close by. Mr. Lochhead said it was unfair to blame Mrs. Gibbs for the trouble at Arapuni. She had sold very little, and commenced doing so recently to oblige a friend. Speaking for the son. Mr. Lochhead said he had been commissioned to buy £8 worth of liquor for a function on the Saturday, and this was temporarily stored in the carshed. Now that it was confiscated Gibbs would be required to refund the £S. Accused were fined £lO each and costs on the first charge and £5 each and costs on the second, the liquor to be confiscated, and accused were ordered to pay car hire, £3.
