THAMES INTERESTS

A largo assemblage greeted the opening event of the Waiomo Queen Carnival on Thursday evening. Most notable was the number of country folk present, a good augury for the success of the carnival. The Mayor, Mr. W. Bongard, welcomed those present, and in wishing the carnival success, said three of the queens had been selected, but owing to the Hauraki Plains carnival not being finished their representative would be chosen later. The candidates were:—Sports queen. Miss Jessie Grubb; Business queen, Miss Phyllis Boyle, and Valley queen. Miss Mavis Elliot. * * * The half-yearly installation of tii3 Thames Druid Lodge took place this week, the District President, Bro. E. Harvey, was the installing officer. Visiting brethren were present from Te Aroha, Waikino and Paeroa. The officers installed were:—Arch Druid, Bro. J. A. Hays; Vice-Arch Druid, Bro. H. C. Young; secretary, Bro. E. O. Brownlee; treasurer, Bro. H. C. Cordes; Inside Guardian, Bro. A. M. Miller; Arch Druid Bards, Bro. R. Houghton and Sister R. Corrin; Vice-Arch Druid Bards, Bros. J. H. Roberts and S. McDonald. P.A. Bro. P. Bygrave, Te Aroha Lodge, P.A. Bro. J. E. Baker, Thames, and P.A. Bro. S. J. Ball, Waikino, candidates for the position of District President, addressed the meeting. A social function was held at the conclusion of the meeting,, and items were given by Bro. J. A. Williams’s orchestra, Sisters Davidson and Corrin, and Bros. P. Rowe and W. Oakley. The Chamber of Commerce has received advice from the Labour Department to the effect that where two holidays occur in the one week, it is not necessary to observe a half-holiday. This means there will be no Saturday half-holiday during Christmas and Xew Year weeks. * *■ * Archbishop Averill will conduct confirmation service at St. George’s Church on Monday evening. A large number of young people are being confirmed. * * * Sergeant Rowell left on Thursday to take up duties at Otahuhu. Sergeant Macnamara. of Christchurch, has taken over the Thames station.
