EMPRESS, NEWTON
“The Broadway Melody,” with its catchy tunes and spectacular scenes, continues to delight the audience at the Empress Theatre, Newton. In the leading male role of this gorgeous picture, depicting the gaiety and colour of New York’s stageland, is Charles King, star of many successes, among them being “Hit the Deck” and “Present Arms,” who will introduce four new song hits which are used throughout the production, in which Bessie Love and Anita Page share the feminine honours.
Bessie Love and Mary Doran, who carry on an incessant feud, supply an unfailing source of comedy. Bessie is hard-boiled. She has been about, and although having played the “sticks.” knows the ropes of the chorus girl. Mary is the cantankerous member of the troupe. She is always at war with the others. She possesses a carping tongue and an incisive wit. In every chorus there is one such Mary.
