GIRL ATHLETES
AUCKLAND INTER-HOUSE SPORTS
HUGE ATTENDANCE With all the success and scenes of animation and colour of previous years, the sixth annual sports carnival of the Auckland Inter-house Girls’ Association was staged at Carlaw Park on Saturday and witnessed by an enthusiastic crowd, exceeding 12.000. Physical drill contests and the various marching parades were carried out with outstanding excellence, while the various competitive events, including ball passing, skipping races, leap frog events, hurdle races, ring games and numerous novelty contests, were competed for with all the usual vim and dash of the inter-house girls. Fourteen firms were represented, which shows the growth of the association by three, Itobinson Bros., Plummer Hat Co., Ltd., and Ashley’s, Ltd., while the Farmers’ Trading Co., Ltd. staged a comeback after three years’ absence from the athletic fold with a squad of 109 girls. The succes sof the gathering was undoubtedly due, to a large extent, to the keen interest shown in the gathering by several members of the Defence Department. Lieut. T. P. Laffey especially, rendered invaluable service as Grand Marshall. An excellent performance was put up by the team representing Robert Greer and Sons, for it won both of the two bigger trophies offered for competition, the S harm an Cup for the house gaining the highest aggregate in team events, and the Grand Victory* Challenge Cup, awarded annually to the team gaining the highest aggregate points.
