FIREMEN TO PAY EXPENSES TWO MEN ARRESTED Said to have been the primary causes of trouble with the crew that delayed the Piako when she "was last at Auckland, Ernest Cyril Hilton and Frank Smith appeared at the Police Court this morning. Hilton, aged 26, and Smith, aged 24, both firemen, pleaded guilty to being absent without leave from the Piako on November 26. Chief-Detective Hammond said that the two men had deserted just prior to the vessel’s departure for London. The men had no pay coming and were destitute. Both accused iver# ordered to pay expenses, £2 10s, in default seven days’ imprisonment.
