ROLL OF HONOUR

PUBLIC COMMITTEE FORMED TO MAKE -DRIVE

£I,OOO ALREADY IN HAND The first and definite step toward including a roll of honour in the Auckland War Memorial Museum was made yesterday, when a well attended public meeting, called by the Returned Soldiers’ Association, was held. A committee was set up to be named the Auckland Provincial Roll of Honour Committee. The newly formed body is to co-operate with the Returned Soldiers’ Association to make a canvass for funds to carry out the scheme already set out. In opening the meeting Mr. A. C. A. Sexton, president of the Returned Soldiers' Association, said that already £1,065 had been subscribed toward the fund but approximately another £3,000 was required. “In two days we will be assisting at the dedication of the War Memorial Museum. It is a wonderful building and all those who helped to bring it about should indeed be congratulated,” said Mr. Sexton. 1

He considered that the memorial should be as fittfng as possible and it would be incomjftete without a roll of honour. The question of the names to be inscribed woijld have to be left to the Returned Soldiers’ Association. The number £f names would be between 6,000 ai*l 7,000 and the estimated cost was _£ 4,000. For this I sum it would be possible to put up j the names in a manner worthy of the men and well worthy of the beauti- ■ ful building. “Those laids were called upon many times, and with that realisation I feel that the citizens of Auckland would 1 not mind being called upon more than once to give assistance in erecting this roll of honour,” said Mr. Sexton. Lieutenant-Colonel T. H. Dawson, said that the roll would include only I the names of those who had died. A record of those men who served and i returned could be preserved in the i embarkation rolls which could be ! bound and left in the building. To this it was pointed out that ! about 33,000 men left the Auckland Province and with the estimated cost in the vicinity of 10s for each name the expense would probably be too great. The following were appointed to the committee, which was given power to add to its number: —Major-General Sir George Richardson, Colonel C. T. Major, Mr. A. St. C. Brown, Mr. H. T. Goldie, Mr. J. H. Jackson (Rotary Club), Mr. C. C. Bach (Commercial Travellers’ Association), Mr. S. Austin Carr, and representatives to be appointed by the Victoria League, the Navy League, the Ex-Service Women’s Association and the Inter-house Girls’ Association.

At a subsequent meeting of the committee Mr. T. S. Miller and Mr. J. N. Elllffe were appointed joint treasurers and Mr. E. H. Sharp secretary. Five teams were appointed to canvass in sections to be arranged.
