HAPPY FUNCTION AT Y.W.C.A. TAKES PLACE OF GARDEN PARTY MANY ATTRACTIONS The inclement weather which has prevailed during the past fortnight made outdoor functions a matter of great uncertainty, and led to the postponement of several gatherings, in- | eluding that of the garden party i organised by the Mayoress's War i Memorial Library League, which was ; to have been held in the grounds of Airs. A. Kidd's home on Saturday, i The function was held in the assemble hall ot the Y.W.C.A. instead. In welcoming the guests, the ; Mayoress. Mrs. A. D. Campbell, expressed regret that the wefither condi- ! lions had been so unfavourable, but | hoped those present would give ail the support possible. The hall looked very attractive with its well-laden stalls, which offered many inducements to supporters of the league. The stall-holders were: Handkerchief and soap stall. Y.W.C.A.: cake stall, the Philharmonic Committee, headed by Mrs. McNair, Mrs. Mason and Miss Fielder; plain and fancy stall, St. John Ambulance and Civic League, Mrs. Mathias and Mrs. Bull, assisted by Miss Edmondstun, Miss W’ithorow and Miss Phillips. The flower and produce stall , was in charge of Airs. Preston Chain- | bers. Miss McDonald and members of : the Grammar School Old Girls’ As- . sociation. Guessing competitions ! were managed by Airs. Meurs and : Mrs. Drake. The sweets and drinks ! stall was in the hands of a special j committee of the W.C.T.U., including Miss Newbegin, Mrs. Charleston and Miss AYrigley. The Query Club served a dainty afternoon tea. Members assisting were the Misses Thompson (2), Miss Wight, the Misses Tapper (2). Miss Gibbons, Miss Williams, Miss Rendell and Miss Kddowes. A mystery room had been arranged, and this proved most interesting to visitors. Miss Connelly, of the Mission to Seamen, acted as "Keeper of the Door.” The honorary secretary of the i league, Miss Alice Hasten, was kept j busily engaged throughout the afternoon, and as a result of combined effort the sum of <£2s was realised. This will go to augment the league funds and to assist in providing books for. children in the backblocks at Christmas-time.
