YOUNG OFFENDERS GIVEN CHANCE TWO CASES ADJOURNED Two young men. both in their ’teens, were given chances at the Police Court this morning after pleading guilty to charges of theft. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., adjourned both cases for six months, adding that, it the accused behaved themselves during that time, he would not enter convictions. Both names were suppressed. Stating that he had not considered it of any value, a motor mechanic, aged IS, pleaded guilty to theft of a fishing reel valued at £4 from a launch owner at Tauranga on June 1. Mr. Wallace appeared for him. Detective-Sergeant Blckerdike said that the reel had been missed from a launch. Accused had been interviewed and admitted the theft. He had stated that he thought the reel to be of no value. Later he had sold it to a man for 12s 6d. Nothing was known against the youth and his parents were respectable people. Mr. Wallace was of the opinion that the theft was entirely unpremeditated. The young man had seen the reel lying on a sack behind the launch when taking a short cut home along the beach. It was of no use to himThe Magistrate: It was worth 12s bd to him evidently. Mr Wallace pointed out that it -was six weeks after the reel had been taken that it was sold. The magistrate warned accused to adhere closely to the instructions of the probation officer during the six months’ adjournment. CAUGHT RED-HANDED Having been caught by a constable removing a tin of benzine from behind a City motor depot, a motor mechanic aged 18 pleaded guilty to stealing tin of spirit valued at Ss on October to Detective-Sergeant Bickerdike, the young man had told the constable that he had, the “ a “' ager’s permission to take the petrol. The manager had denied it and it was discovered that accused, -who had at one time been employed by the deP°t, had a duplicate key to the store-room. Mr. W. J.
