Whangarei Races
SURPRISE BY SIR ARCHIE Golden Wedding’s Hurdles (Special to THE SUN) WHANGAREI, Toda>. IN fine but threatening weather, and before a good attendance, the Whangarei Racing Club’s spring fixture opened today. The track was soft after the heavy rain overnight. Backers were well astray in the Cup, the favourite, High Pitch, being beaten into third place by two outsiders in Sir Archie and Thursby. Golden Wedding scored easily in the hurdles and Crimestor won the opening event after a good tussle with Tetrachate. The Kensington Hack was marred by a faulty start in which two well-backed candidates, Red Lion and Mauriaena were bady left. The favourite, Bombarder, got away well and won comfortably.

Won by a neck, two and a-half lengths between second and third. Time, 1.18 4-5. Favourite Scores Crimestor £391 was a good favourite in the Spring Handicap, with Tetrarchate, who finished second, carrying only £l5O. Valorient and Norval Tea were the first to show out, but with a furlong gone the favourite was handy. Along the back Valorient and Norval Tea were together in front from Crimestor, Valquette, Tukunoa and Land Measure. At the home turn the favourite was on terms with Norval Tea, Valorient, Tetrarchate and Wild Country also being being in the picture. In the run home Crimestor hit the front and looked an easy winner, but had to be hard ridden at the finish to stall off a strong challenge from Tetrarchate, who made a fine effort, to suffer a neck defeat. Two and a-half lengths back came Wild Country, followed by Valorient, Norval Tea, Good Idea and Valquette. KENSINGTON HACK # Of £135; 6 furlongs. I—BOMBARDER (E. T. Andrea), br h, by Bombita—Lady Olwyn, syrs, 8.9, R. McTavish 1 4 ROMAN PEARL, 7.10, J. Conquest 2 5 BIG BERTHA, 7.9, E. Ludlow .. 3 Also: 0 Patutahi, 8.7; 6 Carl Idem, 8.7; 2 Red Lion, 8.0; 3 Mauriaena, 7.9; 5 Haviland, 7.1; 7 Diamond Queen, 7.1; 11 Luxurious, 7.0; 10 Waiau Lady, 7.0. Winner trained by J. Williamson, Ellerslie. Won by half a length; one and a-half lengths betwen second and third. Horses Badly Left Bombarder £3BO, Red Lion £349, and Mauriaena £290 were the prime selections for the Kensington Hack Handicap, but backers of tne latter pair did not get a run for their money, as they, together with Haviland, were hopelessly left at the start. Luxurious was first away, followed by Diamond Queen, Roman Pearl, Big Bertha, Bombarder and Patutahi. Along the back this lot was in a bunch, but crossing the top Big Bertha went to the lead and piloted Roman Pearl, Luxurious and the favourite round the final corner. In the run to the post Bombarder did best and won by half a length from Roman Pearl, who was a length and a-half in front of Big
Bertha. Patutahi was fourth and then came Luxurious, Diamond Queen and Carl Idem. The Start Explained An inquiry was held into the starting incident, when Mr. C. O’Connor stilted that immediately he released the barrier Red Lion, Mauriaena and Haviland wheeled round. He did not blame the 'riders ror the occurrence. There was no question in his mind that the horses were facing the barrier when he gave the signal. The clerk of the course substantiated the statement of The starter. The committee decided to accept Mr. O’Connor’s explanation. HUANUI HACK HURDLES Of £150; li miles 197yds I—GOLDEN WEDDING (W. Taylor), oh m, by Kenilworth—Werota, syrs, 10.6, H. Easy for Golden Wedding Golden Wedding £597 carried the bulk of the investments in the Huanui Hack Hurdles, Adjuster, who finished second, carrying £173. The race was just a procession, the favourite going to the front and increasing her lead the further they went. Night Comet set out to go with Golden Wedding, but crashed at the first fence. Along th© back Adjuster, Automne and Sleepy Sol were the leader’s nearest attendants, but the mare turned for home ten lengths ahead of Adjuster, who was twice that distance in advance of Sleepy Sol. The favourite won with ridiculous ease from Adjuster, while Serang, coming with a late run, got up to snatch third place from Sleepy Sol. Bob Amans and Michael were next to arrive.
