MODERN DECORATION
SMALL PICTURES We are often faced with the problem of hanging a picture which looks small and insignificant. Perhaps it is a favourite, and we particularly want it to hang in a place of importance, yet it undoubtedly does look too small and out of scale. There is, however, a simple solution which is mufch favoured by modern decorators. This is to paint the wall behind in such a manner as to make a frame for the picture. This may be achieved by two methods, either by painting the surrounding wall a plain colour which contrasts with the rest of the wall, or by painting a surround of rough scrawls, which break up the expanse of wall and concentrate attention on the picture. One very successful example of this treatment showed a room with blue walls; over the mantelpiece was painted a large square of fawn-colour, edged with tiny dots, and in the middle was hung a small picture in which the chief colours were fawn and brown.
