FILM STARS IN ENGLAND

MARY PICKFORD IN LONDON WITH HUSBAND PUBLICITY AVOIDED Australian and N.Z. Press Association LONDON, Wednesday. The famous screen artists, Douglas Fairbanks and his wife, Mary Pickford, are spending a brief holiday in London. In contrast to the fuss made by lesser stars of the film world, they are avoiding publicity. The only photographs so far 'published in the illustrated papers show the two artists and Lady Mountbatten standing on the steps of the Mountbatten mansion in the West End. Mr. Fairbanks informed one journalist that he wanted to retire, but could not. He said his wife ruled. Mrs. Fairbanks was asked what was her chief ambition. She replied, “To become a better actress.” That is taken to mean that she has no intention of retiring.
