NO HOARDINGS

FEARS FOR WATERFRONT ROAD PRESERVING THE VIEW Apprehension that the Railway Department, by erecting a fence alongside the railway line on the waterfront road, would shut out the view of the harbour from passengers entering Auckland by rail, was expressed at a meeting of the Akarana Yacht Club last evening. It was stated that it was the intention of the department to erect a six-foot corrugated iron fence between the railway lines and the roadway the fence to extend from near the overhead-bridge to a point opposite Point Resolution. Fears were also expressed that advertising hoardings would also be erected, further shutting out the view. In view of the possibility of hoardings being erected the club decided to write to the Alinister of Railways Auckland City Council and the Director of Town Planning, asking that nothing be done that might obstruct the splendid view of the harbour that visitors to Auckland would obtain on entering the city. Inquiries made by a Sun representative this morning show-, however, that it is uot the intention of the depart ment to erect an iron fence. In the interests of public safety it is considered that a fence should be erected at the side of the road, and a start has been made with the work, but the material to be used will be Cyclone wire-netting. Some of this material is already on the ground. HANDSOME BALUSTRADE Departmental officers have no knowledge of a proposal to erect hoardings, and it is thought that it is most unlikely that this will he done. It -

stated that it is the policy of the department before erecting hoardings always to consult the local authorities concerned rather than have objections raised after the work was completed Plans have been prepared by the Public Works Department for a hand some balustrade to be erected on the sea wall on the opposite side of th» road. The design is most artistic and the balustrade with its ornamental standards, to carry the electric lighting, should provide a nice finish to the Waterfront Road.
