Rabbi’s Brilliant Handicap Victory
N.Z. CUP CANDIDATE PANTHER'S SURPRISE (Special to THE SUXJ MASTERTON, Saturday. The weather was line and the course dry at Opaki for the Masterton spring meeting. The totalisator handled £18,734, an increase of £4,710. Nursery Handicap Princess Betty was favourite for the Nursery Handicap, while the V. Riddiford bracket, Peep and Intruder, also was well backed. Benign and Princess Betty led into the straight, where Gesture came on the outer and won well by a length from Princess Betty, with Arajean third and Nimble and Joie de Yal next. Maiden Stakes Relation, a half-brother to Suggestion, won the first division of the Maiden nicely from the favourite, Roundelay. Relation was always 'prominent, and others in the leading bunch were Roundelay, Robbie’s Mistake, Habit and Dancing Star. Roundelay was under the whip soon after the home corner was turned, but he could make little impression on Relation, who won by a length and a half. Goldlike was two lengths away third, and Habit and Dancing Star followed. The second division turned out to be easy for Warzone, who swept down
upon the leaders in the straight and won by two lengths from Pat’s Boy, who just beat Streamer. Robbie’s Mistake finished well behind the placed horses and Duellona was next. High-weight Handicap Half a mile from home in the Highweight Handicap Tourist led from Billion, Austerity and Masher. At the entrance to the straight Tohrist led Black Mint and Balloon, but in the straight Austerity came through and wone easily by three lengths from Masher, who just kept his nose in front of Tourist. Billion, Black Mint and Vesperus were next. Lansdowne Handicap Clarendon won the Lansdowne Handicap we 1 Rafter having some of the luck of the race. Pari, Patearoa, St. Melba, Dainty Ways and Clarendon were in front at the home turn, where Clarendon drew away and l won by three lengths from King Acre, who was only a neck in front of Pari, with St. Melba right alongside. Masterton Handicap Star Area finished up favourite for the Masterton Handicap. Piuthair led out, but along the back Rouex went to the front and led from Royal Game, Piuthair and Rabbi. At the distance Piuthair came through, but Rabbi challenged and won by a length, with Rouex half a length away third And Star Area fourth, with Spearmiss, Courageous and Tcheka next. Rabbi won well and will improve. Lawn Handicap Imateagirl and Potoaform were out in front to the straight in the Lawn Handicap. A great finish ensued, in which Llyn Dhu won by half a head from Imateagirl, with Count Palatine a neck away third. Shortly was fourth and Chopin fifth. Grandstand Handicap
There was a surprise in the Grandstand Handicap, which Panther just won from Keddan Panther and First Money made the running from Rameses and Keddar, with Moutoa Treasury last. Rameses and Panther were in the lead at the distance, where Keddar challenged, in a hard finish Panther, hanging on long enough to win by a head. First Money was a fair third, just ahead of Rameses. Both winner and runner-up will improve. The winner was advantaged by the walk-up start. Electric Handicap Banket, Clarendon and Hunting Boy were well-backed in the Electric Handicap, from which there were heavy scratchings. Banket led from end to end. Hunting Boy lay second till nearing the finish, when Clarendon beat him by a head. Hunting Call was fourth.
