Generally regarded as a “curtainraiser” to the spring racing carnival in Melbourne, the V.R.C. October meeting alAva.ys proves a strong attraction to racing people. Last Saturday, October 5, there Avas ideal spring weather for the fixture, and if that were not sufficient to tell us that the great carnival is near at hand there Averc colourful frocks and a glorious array of spring flowers, wrote the Melbourne writer “Trentliam” on October 7. Flemington has seldom looked more pleasing to the eye, and as most of the winners Avere Avell backed, the \'ast majority Avere—or should have been—serenely happy. No doubt most people Avill agree that spring racing is more fascinating than racing at any other time of the year. There are various reasons for this. One of them is that the form displayed by the horses Avith Cup engagements is keenly Avatehed and noted, and another is that the tA\*o-year-olds make their debut before the public. Taking the Cup horses it is evident that those who have placed their reliance in High Syce for the Caulfield Cup have no reason to condemn their judgment. This handsome and powerful looking son of Highfieid AA-on the October Stakes like the champion he is, and the fact that there AA r as only half a length margin betAveen the Avinner and the second horse, Lineage, does not take any of the glamour off the performance of the Caulfield Cup favourite. High Syce missed the jump out. and AA'as a long AA'ay back in the early stages. lie had anything but a good position as the field turned into the straight, but coming on the outside of the pacemakers, Clarius and Lineage, lie Avore them dOAvn and Avon most conA'incingly. That run should just sharpen him up sufficiently to fit him for his task in the Cup.
