NO TAX RETURN
FOUR CASES BEFORE COURT AUCKLAND SOLICITOR FINED \ “The department consider© this a very bad case,” said Mr. Ward, prosecuting, when Richard A. Singer was charged at the Police Court this morning on two counts of failing to furnish returns of income. Mr. Moody appeared for defendant fend entered a plea of guilty. “I admit the soft impeachment,” he said. Mr. Ward said that the present rharges were in respect of the years 1928 and 1929, though returns had not been furnished in 1926 and 1927. Repeated requests for returns had been made and default assessments were necessary. This had caused considerable trouble and there had been some controversy over it. “It is not suggested that there has been any evasion of tax, but it was certainly negligence,” said counsel. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.: You paint a blacker p cture than in previous cases of this type. Mr. Moody considered that Mr. Ward Lad painted the picture even a little blacker than was intended. There was no question of failing to pay the tax, and the excuse was that Mr. linger, a lawyer and professional man, had been so busily occupied during the last few years that he accidentally omitted to send the returns. ‘Perhaps as a professional man, Mr. Finger might have been a little more prompt, but there will be no trouble in the future,” added counsel. Defendant was fined £ 3 and costs on one charge and £2 and costs on the other. The total costs were £ 5 4s. On one similar charge A. E. Lawry fend W. H. Prentis were each fined S 3 and costs, and W. X. Leathern was hoed £2 and costs.
