RENTED, BUT NOT PAYING RATES POSITION IN MOUNT ALBERT T(ow many State-owned liouses which have fallen back into the Government’s hands, arc there in lit. Albert Borough? This question was raised by Cr AV G. Russell at the Mount Albert Council meeting last evening. He claimed that a large number of dwellings bad reverted to the State through default of the mortgagees in meeting interest instalments. The Government was renting these houses, he asserted, and was paying no rates on the properties. T don’t think it is fair that the Government should bo allowed to rent these houses without paying rates -While the private landlord is compelled to bear the local authority’s charges.” He called for an Investigation of the number of State-owned dwellings on which no rates were being paid, and which were being rented by the Government. The report is to be presented to the next meeting.
