DAIRY WORKERS’ AWARD
DOMINION V. DISTRICT BASIS DISPUTE FOR ARBITRATION Press Association PALMERSTON N., Tuesday. A meeting of the Conciliation Council. presided over by Mr. P. Hally was hold at Palmerston North today -’n connection with the Wellington district butter and cheese factory workers’ disputes The employers’ representatives urged the continuation of the awe **d on the district basis, but the workers supported the Dominion award policy which was suggested by their federation. All companies, it was considered should be put on the same footing in respect to wages and working conditions. and, where it was necessarv to vary local conditions, this could be provided for in the Dominion charter. After some debate on this particular point the commissioner said anything he could suggest would not help to improve the position. . The circumstance was unique in his experience. He suggested that the dispute should be referred to the Arbitration Court, which would probably determine the point at issue and request the* representatives’ further attendance as assessors in a local or Dominion conciliation council. This proposal was agreed to.
