POLL WANTED

FLAT RATE SUPPORTED MOUNT ROSKILL SUGGESTION "If the Transport Board docs the right thing- it will be guided by the majority of the members of the conference of local bodies on the flat rate,” said Mr. E. r. Jones, at the meeting of the Mount Roskill Road Board last evening. Ho contended that, the suburban residents would never be satisfied with the tram charges until the whole question had been settled by a poll of ratepayers. Ho stated that only the representatives of the city and Newmarket were opposed to the flat rate. Mr. John Dawson, reporting on the drainage scheme for the western area, complained that in the plans previously prepared, the sewers in some places were to be laid at a depth of 15 to 16 feet in solid rock, whereas by a change in the course of the drain this could be avoided. Another sewer was planned to lie beneath a line of pinus insignus stumps. Mr. Dawson therefore found it necessary to recast the layout of the scheme and it would be probably Christmas before fresh plans and specifications would be ready for presentation to the board. The report was adopted. The loan for paving Mount Albert Road having been rejected by the Mount Roskill ratepayers, the Mount Albert Borough Council now requests the Mount Roskill Road Board to contribute one-lialf the cost of maintaining the highway along the Mount Albert boundary. The board decided that as the road was now a main highway, tlio Main Highways Board be asked to bear its share of thr cost of maintenance. Mr. G. j. 'funks, on behalf of several organisations affected by the curtailment of street collections, wrote suggesting that such collections be limited to seven days, including Poppy Day, instead of four days, as decided upon by the local bodies in conference. The board, however, decided to uphold tlio decision of the conference. In order to give relief to holders of farm lands in tlio district tlio board, through Messrs. W. J. Jordan and G. C. Munns, M.P.’s, induced the Minister of Internal Affairs to include road boards in the Urban Farm Lands Rating Bill now before the House, but according* to a letter received from Mr. Jordan the Bill lias now been referred to the Local • Bills Committee, and probably will not be reached again this session.
