FEDERAL ELECTION LIBEL ACTIONS CLAIMS TOTAL £35,000 MELBOURNE, Saturday. A writ claiming £IO,OOO has been served on the proprietors of “The Argus.” Melbourne, at the instance of Union Theatres, Limited, Sydney, for alleged libel. The case has arisen from the publication in the newspaper of an election item the headings of which, it is claimed, were understood to mean that money had been corruptly paid for electric signs on behalf of Mr. W. M. Marks, former Nationalist member for Wentworth in the Federal House of Representatives, who is now seeking re-election. A number of Supreme Court writs arising out of the Federal election campaign were issued on October 3. One was on behalf of Union Theatres, Limited, against the “Sydney Morning Herald” claiming £IO,OOO damages for alleged libel. The others were in respect of claims for £5,000 damages for alleged slander against Archdale Parkhill, Nationalist candidate for Warringah. Arthur Manning, Nationalist. candidate for Wentworth, and H. W. Horsfield, general secretary to the Nationalist Association.
