ROSKILL PROPERTY The reserves committee of the Mount Roskill lioad Board reported to tho full board last evening that, in company with Mr. George Winstone, sen., they had paid a visit of inspection to the land, comprising 21 acres, surrounding Mount Roskill, which had been handed over to the board as a recreation endowment by Mr. Winstone. The question of the layout of the area was discussed, and sites suggested for bowling greens, tennis courts and croquet lawns. The committee further reported that Mr. Winstone had formed a road to the summit of this picturesque cone, and motor-cars may now negotiate it. On the committee’s recommendation, it was agreed to request the Auckland City Council to lend the services of its landscape gardener, Mr. T. Bearson, and obtain his report on the most advantageous mecnod of laying out and beautifying the pa.rk. Mr. Winstone has already undertaken to equip a modern children’s playground with swings, ladders, and other apparatus, and tne board last evening granted his request that, in order to protect the property and keep the turf in good condition, he is to retain the grazing rignts and fuil control on tno area until it is formally taken over by the board.

Mr. Winstone also wrote pointing out to tho board tnat he is anxious to expedite the suggested improvements, so that the pant may be declared open to the public at as early a date as possible.

Members of the board expressed unfeigned gratification in accepting Ivir. Winstone s great gift, and predicted that future generations would have good reason for honouring his memory.
