DEMIJOHN OF BEER
MAORI DRUNK IN CAR CELEBRATING JUBILEE (Special to THE SUN) MART OX, Toda3 T . In the Marton Police Court this morning - , a native named Turei Teki. from Parewanui, was charged with being found drunk while in charge of a motor-car. The traffic inspector said he accosted accused on Saturday evening. He had a demijohn of beer in his car, and it was apparent that he had celebrated Marton’s jubilee well, but not wisely. Teki pleaded not guilty, resenting the statement that he was drunk and adding that he had “only had a few beers.” The Bench, however, was satisfied that he was not in a fit state to be in charge of a car. and pointed out to him the danger while the streets were so crowded. A conviction was entered and a fine of £lO, in default 14 days’ gaol, was imposed. Teki’s licence was cancelled, and he was prohibited from securing another for six months after the expiry of the present year.
