MEETING OF FEDERATION FEMALE JURORS SUGGESTED The Auckland Provincial Federation of Women’s Institutes opened its annual meeting this morning in the banquet hall of the Farmers’ Union Buildings, the president, Mrs. Dudley Dorman, presiding. Delegates attended from Tuakau, Greenhitlie. Swanson, Opotiki. Te Awamutu, Henderson. Te Atatu, Albany. Woodhill, Silverdale, Birkdale. Glen Eden. Hobsonville. Glen Afton. Pukemiro. and New Lynn.
The new A.P.F.W.I. banner, bearing the motto “For Home and Country.” was prominently displayed. This banner is to be competed for each year by the various institutes, and the institute sending in the clearest and besttabulated annual report is to hold the banner for one year. PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS Mrs. Dorman, the federation's president, in addressing the members, particularly welcomed Miss Mowbray, president of the Victoria League, and Mrs. L. S. Rickerby, secretary of the Ever-ready* Committee, and president of the Girls’ Committee. She reported a steady growth in the number of women’s institutes, not onlj* in the Auckland Province, but throughout the whole Dominion. There were now 27 institutes affiliated with the Auckland Provincial Federation. A most successful year had been completed. Mrs. Dorman also referred to the splendid response made by* the institutes to the earthquake relief fund, £7l 13s 9d having been added to the combined funds of the Hawke's Bay and Wellington Federations. ‘TO SERVE, NOT TO DICTATE” In conclusion the president said that the Provincial Federation existed not to dictate to the institutes but to serve them, and she hoped that during the coming year there would be even more co-operation between the institutes. The secretary, Miss PLopper. read the annual report, commenting on the growth of the federation during the past twelve months. Two new voluntary' organisers had been appointed. Mrs. Wettenhall and Mrs. Doorshill. From the sale of the Victoria League Cookerj* Book the federation had received £lO, and a gift of £5 had been donated by the Hawke’s Bay Federation toward organising expenses. The balance sheet showed a satisfactoi*3 r credit balance of £35 Is lod. The following remits came before the meeting for consideration. From Greenhitlie: “That the Federation of Women’s Institutes be represented at the Winter Show and that the executive committee make inquiries as to cost, etc., before coming to a final decision.” This question was referred to the executive committee for further con- ' sideration and investigation. From Opotiki: “That the federation should see if something could be done about sending demonstrators to the Bay of Plenty institutes.” From Henderson: 1. “That individual institutes may', at the discretion of the federation, take from the funds for cases of national calamity', such as the recent earthquake and floods in the South Island of New Zealand.” It was resolved to hold this last remit in abeyance until the federation has a national constitution capable of dealing with such a question.” (2) “That the institute urges the federation to take such steps as seem advisable toward securing the appointment of women as jurors throughout i the Dominion of New Zealand.” It was proposed and seconded that a j letter be sent to the Minister of Jus- j tice urging the appointment of women jurors. The afternoon session is to include : a debate on Esperanto.
