BAD ROADS

TE KUITI TO MAHOENUI HIGHWAYS BOARD’S ACTION That the board fully realised the condition of things in the Waitomo County, but regretted that after careful consideration ot' the . circumstances it was unable to make any' greater contribution toward the cost of maintenance of the Auckland-Wellington main highway, was the substance of a letter received by' the Auckland Automobile Association from the chairman of the Main Highways Board, Mr. F. W. Furkert. This letter was the result of a recent request made by the association to the Highways Board for information regarding the rough section of the highway between Pio Pio and Mahoenui. According to the advice received from Mr. Furkert, an arrangement for the board to expend £3,000 in reconditioning the road and to give a subsidy’ of £3 fo £ 1 on further yvork, was made some months ago with the Waitomo County Council. The work which liad been done so far had almost absorbed the £3,000, and the board had notified the county that further expenditure, amounting to about £B,OOO. would be necessary, the county’s share of this being about £2,000. Mr. Furkert also pointed out that the county r withdrew its offer to contribute £ 5.000 toward the metalling of the Te Kuiti-Bulls main highway and. in fact, had found nothing toward that which was undoubtedly an important route.

"The board is proceeding with the reconditioning of the section between Pio Pio and Mahoenui,” stated Mr. Furkert. “while in the case of the section between Te Kuiti and Pio Pio the boai-d has reluctantly found it necessary to advise the Waitomo County Council that unless steps are taken by the end of the current month to have it repaired and maintained in a satisfactory' condition, the board will take the road over, carry out the maintenance. and charge the Waitomo County its proportion of the cost.”
