The accident occurred on his parents' farm shortly before noon. The boy, with an older companion who was in possession of a rifle, went across the farm property. When a little distance from the farm the elder boy took a shot at a bank, the bullet hitting Lewis. He was taken back to the house and from there was driven to the Auckland Hospital by his mother in her motor-car.
